Military Dogs Save Lives in Afghanistan

Military working dogs are crucial to our efforts in Afghanistan, but their importance and sacrifices are often overlooked.
It's a well known fact that IED's are the most dangerous thing facing our troops in Afghanistan. Military K9s help keep our troops alive by finding IED's so they can be neutralized before they do damage. This also helps protect the civilian population, as roadside bombs and mines planted by the Taliban often destroy buses full of children going to school, Afghan police cars or unlucky civilians wandering the roads.

Keeping the roads free of IED's improves relations with tribal leaders, and helps our troops come home safely, and it would not be possible without these brave, trained, and highly specialized dogs.

As we all know, our troops serving overseas must go to great lengths to deal with the harsh environment of the Middle East. In the summer the days are a scorching 120+ degrees, and in the wintertime the mountains of Afghanistan are covered in snow and temperatures reach extreme sub zeros.
Military dogs have to deal with the same harsh environment. Dust storms obscure a dogs visibility and interfere with a dog's acute sense of smell, which is critical to their job of finding IEDs and roadside bombs.
The rocky terrain and poorly built roads also plague the dogs because they don't have boots to protect the pads on their paws.
Did you know that there are over 2,700 military working dogs currently serving?
Dogs are trained at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Suitable dogs go through a rigorous 90 days training program which trains the animals in how to recognize and detect the explosive materials used in IEDs, how to attack and take down the enemy when threatened, and how to operate in a war zone where the sounds of battle and unpredictable nature can be very confusing for an untrained dog.
Dogs are selected for the program based on their sense of smell, speed, endurance, courage, intelligence and adaptability to the harsh desert environment.
The top breeds that possess these qualities are German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds, and the Belgian Malinois. However, other breeds such as Golden Retriever, Labrador Retrievers, Boxers, Bull Mastiffs, Collies, Briards, and many others have been used successfully.

Grewyhawks in the Lead on Troopathon Blogger Competition

With only a little over a week left until Troopathon, the MAF Blogger Competition for Troopathon IV is well underway and the competition is heating up!
After several weeks for adding blogs, we have an impressive list, and these teams are starting to raise some respectable numbers for our troops over in Iraq and Afghanistan!
The Greyhawks are in the lead, with Hot Air Steamers in a close 2nd. The Anti-Jihadists could still come back, these numbers could easily change quickly!

Bob from Las Vegas calls in to the Levin show. It seems that some time ago Bob, an avid Levin fan and a canine handler in Vietnam, had called in and the host kindly sent him a copy of his book Rescuing Sprite.
As his fans well know, Levin is the dog lover's dog lover and his tale of his own dog was a bestseller.
 So Bob loves the book, and sends it to his soldier son, deployed on his third tour of duty in Iraq. The son puts the book in his right pocket as he heads out on a mission. And he gets shot.
Ready?
The bullet rips through the pocket where Levin's book is being carried. By the time it makes its way through the pages and chews out the soldier's thigh it has mostly done its damage -- to the book. Damage that could have been fatal without the book essentially acting as body armor.
Bob from Las Vegas calls in, "compelled to call," clearly tearful, to thank a stunned Levin for literally saving his son's life.

Folks, tons of blogs have joined our blogger competition! Since we started the competition, the teams have almost doubled in size as more and more blogs are jumping in on this to support our brave troops fighting overseas. But we must continue to pump this effort for the next month, Troopathon is only 30 days away!
